Review: Matt Stillwell “Shine”

There's a new reviewer in town and she's just sent me her first review.  Today new Gab reviewer, Kalyn, sent me a review of Matt Stillwell's "Shine." And be sure to check out more about Matt on his website here.

Shine by Matt Stillwell

Shine is Matt Stillwell’s latest record and from the get go you are thrown into an album that embraces the party.  There are plenty of tracks that stick out at first listen.   Matt’s first single off the record, Shine, is a fun, party-ready track about having a good time with friends out in the country.   This song is perfect for summertime and its one that leaves you constantly humming the tune.  Shine, is not the only summertime party song on the record, the opening track called Whiskey Well, is a fun song that will immediately get your foot tapping.  The trend continues with songs such as Dirt Road Dancing, which describes driving down to a dirt road and dancing along to the radio.  Matt proves he is not a one sided artist, and shows his softer side balanced perfectly into the mix.  Damn This Rain, is Matt’s second single off the record and while it didn’t do as well as “Shine” did, it’s still a likable song.  In the song, Matt sings about a rainy road and how it slows him down to tears as he’s driving away from a freshly new break-up.   Sweet Sun Angel , is Matt’s third single and like the title track, it’s a summery song but instead of being about alcohol, the song is about a girl who means everything to him.  It’s a fun little song!  On tracks such as Go Away and Somewhere Between You And Me, Matt puts his heart on his sleeve as he delivers a vocal that allows you to feel his pain as he sings about missing and trying to move past the girl that got away.   Shine ends with a cover of the Ryan Adam’s song Oh My Sweet Carolina.  This song is by far the best on the record.  The connection that Matt makes with this song, he’s from North Carolina, is the strongest on the record.  Matt sings the heck out of this song and it’s clear that this isn’t just your typical cover song, it’s one that really touches and speaks true of much he misses home.  Sometimes you have to dig a little deeper than the major labels and mainstream radio to find a great new country artist and that is exactly what Matt Stillwell is.  I’d highly recommend this CD to everyone!
